Q: 1
The plot was straightforward. Mr. Summer would call the names of the residents in town to pick up a piece of paper until then one of the person in a family would be stoned. As for the setting, i found it a bit odd that the author wrote this in a pleasant manner (A beautiful and small rural community) considering how much irony the story's plot is because every year a person has to die on June 2nd. One person in specific, Tessie Hutchinson, for characterization shows that Tessie is against the lottery based on her fears and actions when approaching to the box. Some of the people around her were not very supportive in the fact that Tessie said it was unfair due to the lack of time in picking out a ticket. I think the author purposely wrote this because he wanted to tell us that there would be sooner or later a revolt in town. At first it'll start with one person but then as years go by, it'll end up half of the community.

Q:7 In the hunger game, the bourgeoisie were controlling the proletariat by forcing people in playing the games. Much like the lottery, the bourgeoisie had an implicit fear or moral that they spread in the community that gave them the theory that the community will flourish if they gave a sacrifice. For the ideology in hunger games, it was just a manner of entertainment and that it was a custom in their lives. Because that the environment in the city for the bourgeoisie was thriving, it was apparent that everyone who lived in the city thought that the 'game' was a television show that entertained them. A different ideology in the lottery, it was just a sacrifice that made the community thrive. The bourgeoisie always had the upper hand in controlling as well as brainwashing the people.

  1. I agree with what you are saying that the bourgeoisie has the upper hand in these stories, allowing them to control and brainwash the people. In order to exercise this control they use the fear of the people, in particular if no sacrifice is given the community will not thrive. The use of fear in control is very effective, as especially in the lottery it keeps most of the people from wondering what would happen if a sacrifice was not given. Most of the people in the town do not even have this thought cross their mind.

  2. The bourgeoisie's influence in controlling the town is very prominant in both stories, but the bourgeoisie was once the proletariat and was once brain washed as the towns people are now being brain washed. When the brain washing goes from one generation to another it would then become the towns ideology. The town then believes in what has now become their ideologies and they continue to brain wash others to believe that what they do is tradition and the way that all should be run in order to be prosperous. The bougeoisie creates our ideologies through this manipulation and brain washing and as time passes we tend to believe in these ideologies as being our traditions. They become what we believe and live by as time goes on.
