Blog Post #3

In the story "The Room" I believe that Katherine has attempted to repress aspects of the nine-years-ago, life changing event.  She tries to go about her life without remembering the details that lead up to the event and that followed the event.  Her and her husband know that the killing was wrong, but they were not about to let it ruin their marriage.  They went along with their lives after the jury trial was over as if nothing had happened.  They did not speak of it and they only had little unimportant conversations that would not mean anything to either of them.  This was going along fine until Katherine started having an affair.  I think she just wanted to feel as if she was living again.  Once she started to feel that though, the repressed material began to return.  She started remembering and telling of the details that she experienced because she did not completely forget.  Repression may not be in our conscience awareness, but it doesn't fully go away, which is one reason why Katherine could have been having an affair.  The event nine years ago could have triggered her actions in doing something she already knew was wrong, but she continued it anyway.  Just like she did with her husband and the death of Sharon Ritchie.

  1. I agree with the point you made about Katherine wanting to feel as if she was living again. Maybe her marriage had emotionally drained her. It's true that repression doesn't fully go away. Whether we like it or not memories good or bad stick with us. Katherine continued with her affair even though she knew it was wrong, she obviously had to have a motive behind doing so. I like your post! Great points!

  2. I liked how you put your sentence together about how repression isn't in our conscious awareness although it never fully goes away. Katherine had the 9 year old event in the back of her mind for so long her mind thought of how it might feel to be the deceiver and this is what lead her to an affair of her own.

  3. I disagree when you say it is the affair that triggers her suppressed memories. It was a contributing factor, but what had initiated the return was the drunk conversation she had the man she was going to have an affair with when they were talking about each others spouses.
