In regards to the repressed feelings or rather the repressed memories and emotions of Katherine, it can all be related to one event with in the text. I believe that the affair she has with the strange man is in itself her way of continuing the repression of what happened with her husband and the murder. But unknown to her, it is this very relationship that brings the memories of her husband and the murder back to the surface. As the meetings between her and her lover become more frequent the detail of what happened in their conversations becomes more detailed and the information becomes more forthcoming. It is through this affair that these memories and emotions again become repressed when the relationship comes to an end. This can be related to the passage of the text that reads "She banged the door behind her, as she'd been told to. They had not said good-bye, yet as she went downstairs, hearing again the muffled gabble of the racecourse commentator, she knew it was for the last time. The room was finished with.This afternoon, she had felt that, even if it had not been said. With the end of the relationship, the closing of the door and the return to her husband, she has once again repressed the memories and feelings of the murder.

The Room- Discussion with Chaz

Nine years after her husband was accused of murdering a girl he was secretly seeing, Katherine starts an affair of her own.Here we have a story about mainly two people that started out madly in love. The plot thickens as we learn of a a murder that Katherine's husband is invoved with. Katherine comes to two realizations. The first was does she really love her husband. The second, what Was this idea of deception? As she says, she was merely curious about deception. And now she knows "what it had felt like for Phair." As the bland affair drags on, it seems she's more drawn to this man's room than to him. The details of the room have books, boxes, open suitcases, word processor that had not been plugged in, its cables trailing on the floor, clothes hanging on the back of a door.There was a giant anatomical study of an elephant on the wall, with "arrows indicating where certain organs were beneath the leathery skin." Her id personality is controlling the decepton side took over as she impulsively had an affair. Her superego kept her grounded to her husband realizing she still loved him. In the end she settled with the superego. This story was rich with symbolisms and Archetype characters. Very complex Set of emotions coming from Katherine. In the end she decides that she is going to stay with her husband.  

Throughout the short story "The Room" Katherine seems to repress aspects of the fact that her husband had an affair with another woman and might have killed her as well. Throughout the story she seems to want to feel the way her husband Phair felt during his affair. The word "deceive" came up between her and her lover a few times as she was curious to see how it felt. Has Katherine attempted to repress aspects of the nine-years-ago, life changing event?
I answered yes to this question multiple times. The first time i noticed is in the beginning of the story when her lover asked her if she knew why she was having an affair. She nodded saying no but she really did know why she was having this affair. She could have gone into what happened nine years earlier although she kept her feelings in and simply said she didn't know why.  
The second time was when she mentioned to her lover that she was curious about how it would feel to have an affair and he asked if she would be curious again. She hesitated and disturbed by the thought of her rough marriage and of this affair she replied "if you would like me to be" holding back all the emotion and feelings she had inside built up.
 When her lover mentioned his marriage was breaking then asked about hers she hesitated and said "no, not breaking up." In her mind she thought of it and breaking up had not even come up after the event of her husband cheating, although both of them pretty much knew their relationship was broken. Katherine din not go into any detail but she was affirmed that her marriage was broken after being asked about it.
 I believe the time she had to repress emotions is when she found out that her husband was actually in question for the murder of his mistress. She instead of give up her husband and turn her back, protected him when the police asked when he had returned the night in question. She told the policemen he had returned 90 minutes earlier than he actually did.

Blog Post 3 | The Room

Throughout this story, Katherine is caught in a struggle between her Id, Ego, and Superego. Her husband has supposedly killed a woman that was his mistress, but he was never convicted. This affair and murder charge were a complete surprise to Katherine, and it turned her world upside down. Katherine’s Ego still feels that deep love and connection to her husband, but both her Id and Superego are working against her throughout the story.

Katherine’s ego chooses to deal with the struggle between her Id and Superego over her husband’s supposed murder of his mistress by using several defense mechanisms. The first was her use of Intellectualization at the beginning of the story, Katherine has just carried out an affair and is getting dressed, and instead of having thoughts about her husband or new lover, as would be expected, she instead directs her attention to her hair, and then her mothers and grandmothers hair, and how she doesn’t want to get old.

Another defense mechanism she uses is Denial. Katherine seems to know deep down in her mind that her husband is guilty, but on the surface during the story, she is constantly acting like she is oblivious to it. This subconscious knowledge, whether it is true or not, has changed her whole perception of Phair, and is in constant struggle throughout the story with the deep feelings of love and intimacy she has for him.

 These conflicts cause Katherine to withdraw from her husband, as facing him would force her to resolve them. She does this by barely interacting with him, and just continuing on her daily routine as if that was all that mattered. This withdrawal seemed to work manageably until Katherine lost her job, and no longer had a daily routine to hide behind. Instead of dealing with her feelings, she instead chose to escape to a new daily routine, which happened to be sleeping with a man going through his own marriage problems.

The messy, disorganized room that Katherine happens to be meeting this man in is more than just a room, it becomes a symbol of her life. Through Introjection, she uses the state of the room to become symbolic of her emotional state towards Phair. And as the room becomes more and more bare, her feelings toward Phair become less and less intense, until finally there is nothing left. That is the point where Katherine finally resolves her struggles.

In the story, "The Room," I believe that Katherine is attempting to repress the incident that occurred nine years ago. When she found out that her husband not only cheated on her but might have killed a woman, Katherine could no longer look at her husband the same way. Even though she still loved him, she saw her husband as a shadow of the man she once knew. Once the trial for the murder was over, Katherine never spoke about the affair to her husband again and made it seem like it never happened. She eventually had her own affair to try and feel loved and wanted by someone again, however, it brought back all of the repressed memories about the incident. Even though Katherine never wanted to talk about the life changing event, she ended up telling a complete stranger. Numerous times she tells the man that she doesn't want to tell the story but she tells him anyway because the repressed memory is always on her mind no matter how hard she tries to forget about it.

Katherine's actions reflect repressed emotions. Despite the fact her husband was unfaithful with another woman, she denied the murder accusations the police had pin pointed on Phair. Katherine loved  Phair very much and chose to go on with their marriage as if nothing had occurred. Their relationship buried any of the lies, the hurt and the despair. Katherine, 9 year later decides to cheat on her husband not because she craved another mans affection but out of curiosity and to vent her emotions. She wanted to feel how it felt to cheat, since she already knew how it felt like to be the one cheated on. At this point in her life (9 years after the event) her repressed emotions came out. I believe Katherine had suppressed everything she felt at the time of the life- changing event, she had to vent somehow. Her affair was her way of venting her repressed emotions.

In the story "The Room" I believe that Katherine has attempted to repress aspects of the nine-years-ago, life changing event.  She tries to go about her life without remembering the details that lead up to the event and that followed the event.  Her and her husband know that the killing was wrong, but they were not about to let it ruin their marriage.  They went along with their lives after the jury trial was over as if nothing had happened.  They did not speak of it and they only had little unimportant conversations that would not mean anything to either of them.  This was going along fine until Katherine started having an affair.  I think she just wanted to feel as if she was living again.  Once she started to feel that though, the repressed material began to return.  She started remembering and telling of the details that she experienced because she did not completely forget.  Repression may not be in our conscience awareness, but it doesn't fully go away, which is one reason why Katherine could have been having an affair.  The event nine years ago could have triggered her actions in doing something she already knew was wrong, but she continued it anyway.  Just like she did with her husband and the death of Sharon Ritchie.
